3 Mistakes that Can Kill Your Resume

For every job there are thousands of applicants, making job hunting a fierce competition. In such circumstances you need to put your best foot forward and your resume is both your feet, your face and everything else. Therefore, it is vital to have a flawless resume.
Preparing a resume is an art, quiet a vital art, in fact there is a thriving business based on it. There are a lot of mistakes we do when it comes to writing a resume.
Here are three common mistakes and how to fix them.
Mistake 1: Use the same resume for every job you apply for.
Applying for jobs using the same resume is like asking the recruiters to guess how exactly you meet their needs. No one should take that risk.
 Fix It:
Rewrite your resume for every job position you are applying for. Make sure to include the required skills and qualities in the position announcement in your resume. This does not mean by any means lying, simply link or highlight your skills that match their needs.
Mistake 2: Cover letters are not important.
A cover letter should always accompany a resume. Recruiters need to know why exactly you think you are a match for the job.
It is very important to write a customized cover letter for every job, sending a general cover letter with a lazy “I’m _____ and I’m looking for a job in a multinational company; please see my attached resume.” will kill any chance you have.
Fix It:
Write a customized cover letter for each application, always make sure to point out in the cover letter how the skills you have acquired from your current and past positions qualify you for the new position you are applying for.
A well written cover letter is what sets you apart from the competition.
Mistake 3: Your resume tells the recruiter about your qualifications only.
Sure your resume will point out your qualifications and hopefully will move you to the short list. However, your resume tells the recruiter a lot more.
Your resume is all what the recruiter knows about you. If it is not well organized it means you are not well organized.
If you use abbreviations in your resume it means that you are lazy.
If your resume has any grammatical mistakes or typos it means you have poor English. They will not care how high your English scores are or how great your language background is, your best foot forward is lousy.
Fix It:
Revise your resume several times before you submit it; ask a friend to double check it for you. If you are indeed lazy take all the time you need to write your resume and cover letter.
